Steam continues to be a place where all kinds of games can be released and enjoyed. And if you find yourself wanting an action RPG that feels like the games of old, then a new arrival called Goken may just be for you. This game was made by a team who wanted to bring back the classic feel of gaming generations gone by, giving players an open-world, action, and a feeling of nostalgia as they played it. And they might just have accomplished that.
That’s not to say that Goken doesn’t have a story though. You see, gods used to live among the people in the world, and they decided to bestow five blades of incredible power upon one swordsman. He became so good that he was respected across the land. But then, one day, he turned against the gods and began to kill them. Furious at his betrayal, the god Ozone sealed him away. And now, 5000 years later, your journey begins.
The game boasts a seamless experience without loading screens. You’ll enter a village, get a cutscene, start and finish a battle all in the same viewpoint. Battles in Goken will happen in real-time, and you’ll have two buttons that’ll allow you to attack. The twist is that each button can have one weapon assigned, meaning you’ll be able to combo some pretty epic attacks. And with multiple weapons to use and assign, you can have some interesting combos.
Finally, the game has a “Tattoo” system, which you can use to power up your character in unique ways. You can raise health, learn new techniques, and more.
