When Injustice 2 was revealed, the head of NetherRealm, Ed Boon, said that they would go much deeper into the DC Comics roster to pull “more obscure” characters to bring into the mix. And they have done so. Characters like Cheetah, Blue Beetle, and more have gotten a little more spotlight because of the fighting game. And now, another “obscure” character was confirmed tonight via a special tournament shown on the CW. The game is about to get: The Atom.
Now, to be clear, there have been a few to put on The Atom name (and suit), the one coming to Injustice 2 is Ryan Choi, the second to wear the mantle. It honestly would’ve been believable that Ray Palmer could’ve come to the game, given his prominence in the DC/CW universe (as he was on Arrow and now is a key member of the Legends of Tomorrow), but Ryan Choi is more than up to the task of taking on the roster.
In DC Comics, Ryan Choi was a prodigy at the college that Dr. Ray Palmer taught at (or at least, in the current continuity that’s the case), and after Palmer went “missing”, Choi became the Atom. In the current comics, Choi is actually a part of the Justice League of America, and he’s been featured in cartoons as well, mainly Batman: The Brave and The Bold.
In Injustice 2, he uses his size manipulation ability to the fullest, both shrinking down to dodge and get in peoples faces, to growing large and utterly smashing them. It just goes to show that the team at NetherRealm know how to make every character unique.
Now, he is not going to be a part of the upcoming Fighter Pack 2 (which has Raiden, Black Manta, and Hellboy in it), but he is labeled as “coming soon”, so we’ll have to see how that plays out.
