Video games generations are often defined by the titles that helped make it great. Games like Mario, Zelda, Kingdom Hearts, Halo, Uncharted, and more can be found in these “greatest of…” lists for these consoles and sometimes even handhelds. But on those lists, there are also some unique titles that will make you go, “Oh! I remember that one!” and will trigger something that will make you smile. Well, we may have that title for this generations, and its name is Cuphead.
By now, you know what Cuphead is, it’s the passion project from StudioMDHR that has made waves ever since it was announced. And when we say “passion project”, we mean that literally. The team put everything on the line to make the game, all because they wanted to make something special and unique, and boy did they do so.
Now, obviously, one of the biggest defining features of Cuphead is its art style. The game takes inspiration from the original Disney cartoons, and other cartoons of that era, to bring a look that honestly has never been done in video games. Or, at least, not to this extent. It’s beautiful in every way, and it’s resonated with gamers in plenty of ways.
But, even more than that, this game is important for other reasons that may not be registering for you. For example, the games look might trick you into thinking it’s a kids game. When, in fact, it’s a very mature title in many ways. Your characters have made a deal with the literal devil, and the only way to spare their lives is to collect the debts of other beings. It’s very original.
Then, there’s the gameplay. Despite the cute exterior, the game is incredibly difficult. To the extent that most people like to play it in Co-Op mode so that they can be revived and not have to start the boss battle over again. That’s true difficulty.
But in the end, what is the importance of Cuphead? Well, in a gaming world where AAA titles and big flashy graphics and gameplay reign supreme, this game proves that if your game has style and heart? It can win over anyone. And it has, for Cuphead has sold very well since launch.
