Time can be a good thing or a bad thing for an MMORPG. For over time the developers learn about whether or not people are not only coming to the game, but staying in the game. If they don’t, then certain changes must be made. This is currently what’s happening to Star Wars: The Old Republic. For despite a strong start, the player base numbers have fallen, and by request of the players, they want the servers to be merged. And now, we know that’ll happen on November 8th.
But what does this all mean? Well, one of the moderators of the Star Wars: The Old Republic Reddit thread posted about just this. Explaining all that’s happening with the server merge, and why it’s happening.
As noted above, player numbers are falling. But that’s not the only reason to merge servers. One reason is because the current servers have very uneven numbers, some with high populations, and some with low or only decent. Merging them into just five servers will help balance everything out.
The merging will also help fix queuing problems, as there will be more players around and thus less wait time. So basically, the merging is all about helping the players in every way possible.
Also as noted above, there will be only five servers now. They will be called Satele Shan, Star Forge, Darth Malgus, The Leviathan, and Tulak Hord. These will be situated to give players in the US and Europe (along with different language servers) the proper fit for them.
Now, the Bioware team is working to make sure that the server merging doesn’t affect the items you have. It should all crossover. However, your server name may be lost, it all depends on your status among other things.
There are other little tidbits and notes you may want to check so be sure to read the moderators full post.
