As the year winds down, people from all over discuss the year that was, and try to determine what were the best aspects of it. For video games, this means a lot of “Game of the Year” awards ceremonies. Yet, for 2017, the year was chalk full of amazing titles, and for many different genres. There were great shooters, RPGs, action titles, multiplayer games, it was a great year for gaming. But, the one title that many are calling their “Game of the Year” is Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
It’s not hard to see why it’s getting these awards, but it’s also interesting to see them continue to come. It earned the honor at The Game Awards earlier in the month. And now, IGN and Gamespot have added their names to its achievement list. And before the year is over, we wouldn’t be surprised if many more websites named Breath of the Wild as the best game of the year.
As we noted, it’s not hard to see why they love this game, Breath of the Wild took what many fans loved about the Zelda series and amplified them to an incredible degree. The open feeling of the world that was present in titles like Ocarina of Time and A Link Between Worlds was fully realized here. For here, you could go to any dungeon in any order, it was all up to you. Or, if you just wanted to wander the world and see what all was out there waiting for you, the option was there.
Plus, Breath of the Wild had arguably the best take on Zelda herself, as well as added new characters that are sure to endure throughout time.
The best part for Zelda fans is that Nintendo has confirmed work on the next one has already begun. And when it releases, it’s possible we’ll be talking about its awards too.
