The Skylanders franchise has had many incarnations since it arrived in 2011. It not only brought back the popular character Spyro to prominence but it single-handedly brought forth the toy-to-game boom that was later filled with Disney Infinity and Amiibo figures. Despite all the success and sales, however, it’s always been a game for consoles or tablets. But now, it’s about to get a dedicated mobile release.
Activision has partnered with mobile gaming developer Com2us to bring Skylanders to the mobile market. Their resume includes games like Summoners War: Sky Arena, Soccer Spirits, various sports titles such as MLB 9 Innings and Golf Star, and more.
It’s hard to deny the appeal of a mobile title for Skylanders. Aside from standard game sales, over 300 million Skylanders figures have been sold since 2011, an impressive feat. The twist is that this won’t be a “standard” title in the franchise, rather being a turn-based RPG, a first for the series. The game has numerous characters for players to pick and play with, from original characters to the Giants, the Swap Force characters, or Trap Team, and even just vehicles that have been brought in over time. An RPG might just be the perfect genre for a mobile version of Skylanders.
Com2us will make the game in full, but Activision will provide support in development. The developers also noted that for them, the highest priority is to ensure the level of quality fans would expect from the franchise. The game is set to arrive sometime in 2017.
