The tale of Roadhog in Overwatch is a very complicated one. You see, at first, he was just a character in the game, much like all the other heroes and villains in this FPS team game. But then, much like in many titles with numerous unique characters, players soon realized how unbalanced he was. Meaning, that players could just use Roadhog and dominate matches, no matter what the rules or setting was. For months, players complained about Roadhog to Blizzard, and eventually, he got nerfed. But was that a good thing?
While the obvious answer is “YES!!!!”, some Overwatch players don’t think so. In fact, on Battle.net, user cmdrkilljoy blames the fanbase for killing off the character. By “killing” we mean that he’s rarely used anymore in matches. In fact, according to another thread, he has the lowest winning percentage among tanks in the last six months.
“Hog, previously one of the most balanced heroes, is now one of the least popular heroes in higher level of play, and we still have no word from Blizzard on why he was changed and whether he will be fixed,” cmdrkilljoy exclaims.
Now, it’s a little…ok, a big stretch to say that Roadhog was at any point in time one of “the most balanced heroes”, because he totally wasn’t. In fact, Roadhog was infamous for his hook that could one-shot people without even trying. Also though, he was incredibly hard to kill. So, yeah, he was never balanced, however, that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have a point about the nerf killing the character.
If a character is downgraded too much, they’ll never be used, and thus a rethinking of the nerf needs to be brought up. Naturally, we don’t need him to be as OP as he once was, but a balance between where he was, and where he is now, would be nice.
