Video game movies have been, and likely always will be, a mixed bag when they arrive. Yes, there are some that do well, and have done well. Like Tomb Raider, or the Resident Evil series. Yet, then there are ones like BloodRayne, Super Mario Bros., and underwhelming titles like Prince of Persia and Assassin’s Creed. Yet, video game developers and movie makers continue to team up to make them. Now, we’ve got news of another Ubisoft title that’s heading to the screen. The Division.
Now, on the surface, and maybe even under it, this title isn’t too unlike certain movie genres. As The Division is about a secret group of soldiers that’s in the civilian population and only get activated when certain disasters occur or attacks happen. They’re meant to help restore order and assist other government agents, though that isn’t always easy when there are attacks going on.
This premise is very easy to adapt, and in some ways, is very relatable, as it’s about people being called to action when danger arises.
Now, The Division already has some people attached to the film, mainly in its stars Jessica Chastain and Jake Gyllenhaal. But today, we got news on who will be writing and directing the film. Stephen Gaghan. You may recognize him for getting an Academy Award for writing Traffic. As well as being nominated for his work on Syriana.
Gaghan is very excited about the film, and notes that the game itself is a nice blend of genres, which makes adapting it to a film very fun, and full of possibilities.
There’s no release date for The Division film yet.
