The ability to push video games forward into new and exciting directions is one of the biggest prerogatives among both video game developers and players. All the latter group wants is for the game they love to become stagnant. Games like Overwatch ensure that stagnation doesn’t happen via new characters and new game modes. But for one player, he’s thinking about a new kind of character that two people can control at once.
This comes from Battle.net user Antix, who notes that another Blizzard title, Heroes of the Storm, has such a character in the form of Cho’Gall. In the game, one player controls the movement and certain abilities of Cho’Gall, while the other player controls another set of abilities. Since two players control this one character, Cho’Gall takes up two character slots on the team. Antix thinks something similar, yet unique to Overwatch, can be made. His thoughts are of a pair of characters that could play separately (to keep in line with the singleplayer experience) but then can be combined to become a merged character (like Cho’Gall), which would be something very unique.
He details his creations by naming them Mono (an autonomous vehicle) and Duo (its rider). Separately, they’d have individual stats, weapons, mobility, etc. But then, when the players decide to bring them together, they take on a new form that both players would control at once. “Mono provides amazing mobility and protection to Duo while doing little damage on his own, but Duo can bring the pain.” He states.
Antix goes in detail with Mono and Duo, even labeling how they would be effective in combat both singularly and while merged. He even notes what their potential backstory would be.
As for other Overwatch players, there’s some positive and negative feelings about this. The main fear is that, much like Cho’Gall in HOTS, balancing the characters (in both forms) would be the biggest risk. User Sk3wlbus says that “Cho’Gall is one of the worst heroes in HoTS because Blizzard refuses to balance them for heaven knows why. I have no doubt it would be the same in Overwatch.”
Others, however, are more positive and think that a lot of creativity went into the creation of Mono and Duo. Could they, or some similar duo, come to Overwatch? Only Blizzard can know for sure.
