So, when it comes to Hollywood and the desire to make movies based on video games, their record isn’t the best…in fact it’s actually gosh dang terrible. Yes, you have some successes like the Resident Evil franchise (which some would argue isn’t as good as the Box Office made it seem it was), Tomb Raider, and a select few others. But the rest is pretty awful. And fans fear what may be the next video game franchise “ruined” by a Hollywood movie. Well, one fan decided to beat Hollywood to the punch in regards to Rocket League.
This comes from player Sunless Khan, who admitted on Youtube that Rocket League would make a pretty awful Hollywood film, so he and his friends got together and decided to make the cheesy trailer we know we’d get from this “film”.
“My friends and I took 3 months just to find time to film this cheezy little trailer, so don’t expect an actual movie anytime soon, plus we’d probably get sued!” he joked on his Youtube page.”
So…yeah, that trailer was close to what Hollywood would do. Naturally, Hollywood wouldn’t have used the in-game footage but hey, these are fans, let’s give them credit for going this far and making it as big as they could.
It’s not surprising that Rocket League has such loyal fans, though the game came out in 2015 the title is still being played by more and more players with seemingly each passing month. It was the highest-selling PlayStation Store digital game in 2016, and now coming up at the end of this year, the game is heading to the Nintendo Switch. As if that’s not enough, the team at Psyonix are making big strides with Cross-Play capabilities to ensure that everyone can play with just about everyone (looking at you Sony…).
So yeah, Rocket League is so popular…it honestly doesn’t need a movie.
