The world of video games is very diverse. Every year we see all different kinds of titles from different genres and developers. Some titles get the highest of hype, others are indie games that are fighting to get your attention. Then, there are those games that arrive, make an impact, and then somehow fall out of the limelight in some aspects because of the hype of another title. These are the dark horse titles, and they’re just as important as any other games.
On Reddit, gamer Veracity93 loved the dark horse titles so much that he wanted to reveal which were his favorites of the year. For him, Pyre, Persona 5, and World of Warcraft Legion stood out the most. And yes, he realizes that some of them aren’t exactly “Dark Horse”, but in a way they are.
So, with his picks revealed, what did the rest of Reddit think was the best dark horse games of the year?
Fire Emblem Heroes was an unexpected pick. The second mobile title from Nintendo won over a Redditor because of its consistent updates of content and characters, which led to them playing it every day since launch.
Nier: Automata got much love from Reddit. Made by fan-favorite developer Platinum Games, the title has won over many with its unique story, world, and fun gameplay.
Some Kickstarter projects also made the list here. Including Torment: Tides of Numeria, and Divinity: Original Sin 2. Both of which were very successful on the platform.
Another “not exactly” dark horse pick was The Evil Within 2. It’s understandable why they called it dark horse though as it’s not one of Bethesda’s most famous franchise.
Other nominated titles include Gravity Rush 2, Nioh, Golf Story, A Hat In Time, and more. What games surprised you this year? Be sure to let us know.
