Development company Gravity have announced that they have signed a licensing agreement to bring the game Ragnarok Online to Southeast Asian territories. According to Korean sources, the deal is said to be worth around 1.1 billon won ($1 million).
The contract agreement will bring Ragnarok Online to areas such as the Philippines, Singapore and Malaysia. Ragnarok Online is considered the most popular game in Korea, and since 2002 has accumulated a membership of over 50 million players, will global concurrent users sitting at around one million. Sales for the game have reached 1 trillion won, which translates into around $850 million. The game was awarded the best MMORPG at the Thailand Game Show Big Festival back in December, showing its popularity in the Southeast region at the game exhibition.
Publishers Electronics Extreme have a major hand in raising the awareness of Ragnarok Online, particularly in the Southeast Asian region. Their agreement with Gravity will bring the game to the other regions stated above, but they also managed to re-launch Ragnarok Online in Thailand last year, which subsequently led to a further 100,000 concurrent users playing the game. The reach that the game has achieved is already impressive looking at sales figures alone, and this will only improve further when it is introduced to brand new countries with potentially vast audiences.
