It would be fair to say that Path of Exile is still generating plenty of hype. Since the popular ARPG made the transition to console, it has enjoyed plentiful limelight with many discovering the previously PC-exclusive title for the very first time. There are a lot of understandable comparisons between PoE and the popular action-RPG franchise entry Diablo III, with many believing that Path of Exile improves on the Blizzard giant in a number of ways.
So what is it that sets Path of Exile apart from other titles of a similar nature? It does have many things to boast about for sure, including its seemingly endless levels of customization, addictive combat mechanics, deep narrative and also the fact that it is indeed free to play. What’s more, it isn’t a pay-to-win situation either, with the monetization aspect being based on cosmetic items only, so there’s no need to panic on other players getting ahead of the game if you’re strapped for cash.
Yet there is one feature that does seem to stand out the most, and that is how well Path of Exile takes what should be a common and depth-lacking entity and turning it into something far more effective. When you think of items in general for gaming, the majority of the time you expect them to simply represent a character’s equipment and not much else. However, PoE goes one step further and uses them to expand on other features that are in the game.
For example, where a gem would be considered a normal item anywhere else, here they are used to grant skills for the player, even though they are treated as a regular item. The skill must be used whilst the relevant gem is socketed, forcing you to think about what items you are using rather than the conventional methods found elsewhere. Currency is another interesting take on how items work, too. Currency items can be used by the player in order to modify other items, and can also be used selling equipment and trading.
The very foundations on which Path of Exile is built is predominantly based around items, like many games of a similar ilk. Though in this case, they seem to be used in a much more effective and all-rounded way. On top of currency and gems, there are weapons and armor to factor in, with defense proving just as important as offense in many situations throughout.
Perhaps one of the highlights as far as Path of Exiles items are concerned, are the mods, which can be found as you progress through the game. Magic, Rare and Unique items all have magical properties known as mods, which show up as prefixes or suffixes on the name of each item, some of which can feature three of each.
There is little doubt that Path of Exile is a game that revolves around items, ones that are not only used to better your character but to engulf you in the overall experience and aid your progress in so many ways that it brings a huge wealth of variety that will keep you playing for a very long time to come.
