Despite its focus on gameplay, Overwatch does have a lot of story. In fact, every single character in the game has a unique story that is slowly getting fleshed out. Sometimes it’s through dialogue, sometimes it’s through Blizzard-made comics, and sometimes it’s via animated shorts (like the one recently done for Reinhardt). Yet others have parts of their history already known, or at least, they think they know it. And two of these characters are apparently going to be getting a spotlight soon to further flesh out their history.
These are Gabriel Reyes and Jack Morrison, aka Reaper and Soldier: 76. People think that these two have always hated each other because of certain things that happened in their history, but as Overwatch Director Jeff Kaplan noted in a Q&A (and transcribed by a fan), that’s not exactly the case. And what’s more, their relationship is going to be explored even more.
According to Kaplan, Reyes and Morrison were in fact really good friends right up until things went really south. When Morrison was given “more power”, Reyes was relieved. He didn’t want political power, he wanted to lead the team and get the job done. And Morrison knew he could protect Reyes and the team on the political front, and that’s what happened.
But, Kaplan promises that they’re going to show how the relationship ended, and how it led to Morrison truly abandoning his identity and becoming Soldier 76. What might also be revealed is why Reyes did what he did, a lot of his motivations are unknown at present.
This is further interesting because one of Reyes’ supporters is Moira, and she is coming into the game very soon. Could she have played a part in their friendship ending? It’s hard to say, but it looks like more stories are coming.
