The long-awaited The Last Guardian gets a brand new CG trailer to remind us that its release is only a few weeks away.
Fumito Ueda inspired many in 2005 with the critically acclaimed Shadow of the Colossus, the tale of a man looking to resurrect a maiden sacrificed because she was believed to have a cursed fate. In the Forbidden Land, an entity known as Dormin agrees to help the protagonist, Wander, but in order to do so, the man would have to destroy the idols present in the Shrine of Worship. Human hands could not achieve such deed, but the idols were representations of 16 colossi that wandered the Forbidden Lands. With the ancient sword capable of slaying such beasts, Wander sets on a dangerous and epic journey with unforeseeable consequences.
The world realized by the Japanese developer, which draws heavy inspiration from the likes of The Legend of Zelda, has a new chapter set to release on December 6. The Last Guardian, like Ico and Shadow of the Colossus before it, is not directly connected to previous titles, but it is assumed that it takes place in the same grounded world where magic and fantastical creatures are the things of legend. The game has been in development since 2007 and was first announced at the E3 in 2009 for the PlayStation 3, but due to numerous difficulties it had to be delayed several times until it was finally brought back to light on last year’s E3, this time for the PlayStation 4.
Told as a flashback, The Last Guardian follows a young boy as he tries to escape a mysterious castle with the help of a griffin known as Trico, which fans understand as a nod to the game’s place in the franchise’s timeline, release-wise–since Ico, for the PlaysStation 2, was the first title in the collection. It becomes available on December 6, exclusively for the PlayStation 4.
