We recently found a rather interesting League of Legends Reddit thread that surprisingly isn’t talking about champions, or buffs or nerfs, but rather the players are discussing the relatively new 5 ban system. The focus of this Reddit thread is how the 5 ban system actually made competitive play in LoL great again, and other users pointed out that it is also making ranked and casual draft more fun to play.
User dantam95 said, and to quote:
The 5 ban system has been awesome to see this season and I think it’s been one of the most exciting wrinkles that Riot has introduced in a long time. Coaches and analysts must love it. It allows for both bans on OP champions while giving a phase for target bans and such that make good matchups. We even get to see cool scenarios such as when Bjergsen got 5 banned in the playoffs LOL, or that regular season match where he was forced onto Xerath (I think vs. Dig). I’ve always loved watching P/B phases but before this season they were kind of all the same. This year, they’re much more versatile. The 2nd phase is always different.
Basically, the gist of it is that the 5 ban system allowed the pros to be more flexible with their bans and to also allow for better counter picking and also giving the players the chance to ban some really powerful or even overpowered champions in that current meta. With the old League of Legends banning system that allowed each team to ban three champions, once you ban every champion that is too strong in the meta, you’re left with no bans for champions that counter your strongest pick. This basically made the competitive scene rather stale, as you would always see the same champions get played over and over again, but now that every player gets to ban one champion, counter picking and counter banning are a very real thing.
As dantam95 said, you can take one really powerful player from a team like Bjergsen, and then use all 5 bans to stop him from playing his most used champions that he uses to carry and force him to pick a champion that he doesn’t play as much.
But, this Reddit thread also has people talking about how this ban system affects ranked and casual draft. Of course, players are happy that this system exists, but the question is, why? Well, let’s say that you’re playing the Ranked mode on your own, and you’ve constantly been running into good Zed players that just keep carrying their team. Now, you can ban Zed yourself instead of begging someone to do it for you, that you sometimes had to do with the old system, which will help you at least mentally, as you won’t be going up against the same champion that has been destroying you for the last couple of games.
Overall, League of Legends players are really happy with the new ban system and how it’s affecting both the competitive play and the ranked and casual draft modes. What are your thoughts on the 5 ban system, tell us down below in the comments!
