No one can deny it, League of Legends is one of the most dominant video games in the world, with an enormous player base that only keeps getting bigger, addicting gameplay, and of course, tons of esports events. The game is holding the crown as the MOBA king, but have you ever wondered, for how long will that be the case? No game can maintain its success, especially as big as this one, for too long, but will LoL become a thing of the past anytime soon?
How many years did it take for World of Warcraft to become less popular? 6? Or maybe 7? Even though that particular MMORPG isn’t as popular as it once, it’s still one of the biggest ones out there, and in its prime, there wasn’t a single soul back then that hadn’t heard of the name “World of Warcraft.” And LoL is probably in its prime right now. Of course, this can’t be confirmed and we can’t say that it’s 100% true, but think about it for a moment. Ask anyone, doesn’t matter if they play games as a hobby or if they maybe played one game in their entire lifetime if they had heard about a video game called “League of Legends,” and we can bet that you won’t find anyone that says no.
League of Legends is a grandiose game, and we don’t expect to see it die anytime soon, but to see what other people think, we went Reddit diving and found a thread where LoL players talked about the game and how much longevity it has. Naturally, no one thought that the game would die out anytime soon, but one user called nevynervine gave an interesting analysis on this topic:
I honestly don’t think it’ll die on its own. I expect around 2022-2025 the player base will be in decline and riot will rebuild the game from the ground up and rerelease it, carrying over paid content from the original.
They can only play catchup with graphics and game engine for so long before some fresh new genre defining game usurps it.
Basically, the only way for LoL to die is for Riot Games to screw things up. Or a new and innovative game comes out and then just pulls everyone to it, but we haven’t seen a game like that in quite a few years, and we don’t expect another breakout hit like LoL to emerge anytime soon.
