Iconic Korean League of Legends Support player, Hong “MadLife” Ming-Gi, has officially joined North American Challenger Series (NACS) team, “Gold Coin United”.
His recruitment shocked the League of Legends community. Although MadLife has long been dethroned as the best Support player in the world, his explosive popularity is evident because he was once again voted into the All-Stars event this year. It’s inevitable for players to speculate on the reason(s) behind MadLife’s decision.
One explanation is the comradery between Gold Coin United’s coach, Choi “Locodoco” Yoon-sub, and MadLife. Dating all the way back to 2012, Locodoco and MadLife played together in the bottom lane on MiG Frost. According to Locodoco, his close friendship with MadLife continues to this day.
A second, possible factor leading to MadLife’s decision is the departure of his former, long-time teammate, Park “Shy” Sang-myeon, from CJ Entus to Rox Tigers. As CJ Entus slowly declined as an organization since their 2nd place finish at the 2012 League of Legends World Championship, MadLife might have only been inclined to stay with them because of his ties to Shy.
Lastly, as difficult to believe as it may seem, Gold Coin United could have been the best prospect, in terms of success and monetary gain, for MadLife. Whether it’s because of his teammates, the paycheck, or a combination of the two, the unlikely choice of a NACS team trumped other offers. Whatever the factors influencing Madlife’s decision may be, we hope he finds success on Gold Coin United.
