World building is more than just making a story and putting characters into said story. It’s about setting the limits of the world, defining what can exist in it, and what cannot. However, when you don’t exactly paint the full picture, it leaves questions regarding what’s able to exist or not. Thus is the question for Overwatch players.
Now, on the surface, everything in Overwatch can be explained with one word: technology. Winston is a genetically enhanced gorilla who was made on the moon. Tracer can “travel” through time because of a device made by Winston. So on and so forth. But, not everything is as easily explainable. Battle.net user Dabbo wonders if magic exists in the world of Overwatch because of characters such as Hanzo, who can shoot dragons from his bow. Add to that characters like Genji, Zenyatta, and others who have abilities that defy even the most science fiction of tales, and you get the question “does magic exist in the Overwatch universe?”
Now, there’s no clear answer to this as Blizzard hasn’t stated that magic doesn’t exist in this universe, but that’s not to say there isn’t a technological explanation as we don’t know everything about all these characters. One Battle.net user was told that Hanzo’s “dragons” were Hard Light (think Green Lantern) constructs that were activated by nanomachines via voice commands. While that’s not confirmed to be true, it is a plausible scientific explanation based on everything we know so far.
The community itself is divided on this. On one hand, some think it would be odd for magic to “suddenly” appear in the game. On the other hand, magic is something that could lead to some interesting characters in the future, both good and bad, so why limit the universe? What do you think? Should magic exist in Overwatch?
