When Metroid Prime 4 was revealed at E3 2017, fans thought Nintendo was finally listening to them, and they were grateful. What they didn’t realize until later though was that they had listened to them a whole lot sooner than that. Nintendo revealed Metroid: Samus Returns for the Nintendo 3DS, a title that was coming out in September of this year, and fans were floored. Since then, we’ve been getting more and more information about it. And today, that includes a new trailer detailing the game in full.
Metroid: Samus Returns is a 3D modernization of the second game in the Metroid series, which was called Return of Samus. See the pun on the title? Anyway, that game was released on the Game Boy, so it was a bit limited graphically when it came out. But now, it has the full power of the 3DS behind it, and that’s just the beginning.
Samus is getting some brand new tricks in the game, mainly new powers via Aeion. These can help her scan for enemies, and do some wicked damage to foes. In fact, Samus Returns allows her to actually Counter enemies with a wicked backhand, and for the first time in a 2D Metroid game, and there is 360 degree angling, meaning you can aim in any direction to shoot enemies.
There has been a little bit of controversy with Metroid: Samus Returns, mainly in the Amiibo for it. For like all Amiibo, the game gets stuff unlocked if you have it, but one of the Amiibo, the Metroid one, unlocks a special difficulty mode only available through it. This led fans to believe that the “Hard Mode” for the game was locked to that Amiibo. Fortunately, it isn’t, but fans are still mad about the locked content.
Either way, Metroid: Samus Returns arrives on 3DS on September 15th.
