Question, what is the hottest video game console on the market right now? Answer: The Nintendo Switch. Since day one the console has been selling out like crazy, and has been at the top of the charts nearly every month. What’s more, the software for the game is selling just as well, with multiple million plus sellers, in both 1st and 3rd party games. And with more epic games to come, players are asking what else the Switch could bring to the table. For many, the answer should be MMORPGs.
Nintendo is weird when it comes to advances in technology. Sometimes they’re ahead of the game, like with the Wii and the Switch, and other times they’re behind. Now, before, Nintendo couldn’t do a MMORPG on their systems because their internet system wasn’t the best. The Nintendo Switch though is about to get an update with Nintendo Switch Online, so could that change things?
As in all things, it’s not all about Nintendo, it’s about whether the developers are willing to bring their MMORPGs to the console. Right now, there’s only one team who’s open to such an idea, and that’s Square Enix. They’ve said for a while that they’re open to bringing Final Fantasy XIV to the Switch, and have had discussions with Nintendo about it.
The catch? They want to make sure the game is treated with the respect it deserves, as well as making sure Nintendo knows what it’s getting into by having such a title on their system, something they haven’t done before.
Now, should this happen, with Final Fantasy XIV or any other MMORPG, it would be a big victory. But it’s only the first of what needs to be many for it to continue. For you can put a game on a console, but will people play it? That’s usually the other concern, especially for console MMORPGs, will players want to play it on consoles rather than PC?
Nothing is impossible in the game industry, and the Nintendo Switch could get a slew of MMORPGs in the future, it’s only in its first year of release. But, until the first one crosses the line? It’ll only be a hope.
