When you look at what Nintendo has done over the past 9 months or so with their newest console, the Switch, you can see why the fan-beloved company has endured for so long. They have a passion in their fanbase that wants the company to succeed and do great things, and they have for many decades now. Just look at their franchise roster and you’ll see a variety of characters covering a variety of gaming genres. But, one genre that they haven’t done for their 1st party franchises is an MMORPG. Could that someday happen?
It’s certainly not out of the realm of possibility, they do have worlds where this could potentially happen. It would just need to be the right one.
One possible candidate could be F-Zero, the fan-favorite high-speed racing game has been a part of Nintendo’s lineup since the SNES, but hasn’t had a dedicated console game since the Gamecube, why not rebuild it as an MMORPG? Players could create a character, start with a car, then race players from around the world to become the change of the Grand Prix, which would be done in “seasonal” style. Lot of potential there.
One that a lot of people have thought about is Pokemon. One of Nintendo’s first true “online” games (via Link Cables and such), players have often wondered what it would be like to walk in a Pokemon world where all the other trainers they meet were actual people. What’s more, the MMORPG setting would allow for a massive Pokemon world to explore, which is infinitely enticing.
There’s other possibilities too of course. Fire Emblem could be tweaked to be an MMORPG with a very grand story. Or how about Legend of Zelda? Where you could be any of the races of the franchise in order to save the world?
The potential is there, but will they try it out? That remains to be seen.
