Nintendo has been working for a while to expand their brand in a big way. Outside of video games (both console and handheld) they’re having a theme park made in Japan (and possibly coming to the US), and there’s rumors that they’re trying to get back into the TV/movie business too. But sometimes the simplest ways to do things are often the best, and Nintendo knows that. So, they teamed up with t-shirt seller Uniqlo to have a contest to help make some unique Nintendo apparel.
The contest was simple; make a Nintendo themed shirt design, and submit it. If you were selected, your design would get made into a t-shirt to be sold in stores and online. The lure of that was apparently very strong, for Uniqlo says on the reveals page that 16,000 submissions were put into the contest. That’s a lot of Nintendo fans wanting their shirts to be seen.
Winners were selected by legendary developer Shigeru Miyamoto, who is the creator of Mario, Donkey Kong, Pikmin, and a whole lot more, as well as other members of the Nintendo team. In the end, 25 shirts were selected, and just like the Big N itself, has a wide range of looks and characters on them.
As you can see from the video, there’s a lot of creativity in these shirts, and even the simple ones show a perfect example of the love fans have for their favorite game maker. From Mario, to Donkey Kong, Pokemon, Legend of Zelda, Animal Crossing, Star Fox, Splatoon, and more are represented on these shirts, and all are something Nintendo fans will likely want.
This new lineup of shirts are said to be coming later this year, so you’ll want to pay attention to both Uniqlo stores as well as their websites so you can get them the moment they go on sale.
