Inspiration is an important part of creation, for without a spark, there is nothing to grow. But, where that inspiration comes from is entirely debatable. Media for years has been inspired by things both abstract and previous made. Take for example, books and novels. TV shows, cartoons, major films, and video games have been inspired by stories created by others. The question we wish to ask today is, could MMORPGs create some worlds via books as their sole inspiration?
Now sure, we know that Lord of the Rings Online is a thing, and there’s rumors of Bethesda working on a Game of Thrones MMORPG, but is that all there is to offer? Certainly not, after all, there are many beloved worlds and universes in books that haven’t been explored to the extent an MMORPG could.
For one that’s somewhat established, how about The Witcher? That was based off of a book series, and exploded into major popularity. Imagine being your own Witcher, and going on adventures through the whole world the series is based on?
Or, if you’re looking for a more sci-fi feel, how about something based off of the works of Asimov? The man who created the “Three Laws Of Robotics”. Could you imagine being in an MMORPG that had a human vs. robot plotline? That would be cool.
Maybe, a horror kick is what you want, so how about Lovecraft? Yeah, his stories have inspired games on some level, but how about a deep dive into his mythology? Wouldn’t that be cool?
And that’s just a few examples. What about a full-on Harry Potter MMORPG? Or one based on the numerous Stephen King books like The Dark Tower? MMORPGs have the potential to bring numerous classic tales to life, all they need is the greenlight to do so, and the team willing to try and make it good.
