We all know them. Yes, “them,” the people who try and take advantage of others in video games. The ones who cheat the system or work it in such a way that they get what they want, whatever that may be. With the advancement of technology came greater and more cunning cheaters, trolls, and just toxic players. They’re hard to fight off at times, so that’s why developers give us the power to report them and try to get them off the game. But, some Overwatch players are stating Blizzard is punishing them enough.
This comes from Reddit user ScarletSilver, who recalls how he reported a player over 2 thousand times to Blizzard. This player was constantly being foul on chat, and thus he reported them to Blizzard. Their response? A week ban. That’s it. And this was after over a year of reporting them, that was their only punishment. Needless to say, they weren’t happy with the lack of good punishment:
“It is really no wonder why toxic players, trolls, and throwers are prevalent in competitive, they can get away with it.”
As sad as it sounds, he’s kind of right. Though Overwatch is one of the most popular games in recent memory, it’s also a title that is mired in controversy at multiple levels. The player community is known for being very toxic to one another, and cheating (through various means) is seen all over the place. From unauthorized hacks to “throwing” games to make a certain goal happen, it’s everywhere.
This issue raises some legitimate questions, such as, “Why is reporting even an option if Blizzard won’t do much with those who have been reported?” It’s a solid question, and one that many are asking right now. We’ll just have to wait and see how Blizzard handles things in the future.
