Heroes Of The Storm is a MOBA title from Blizzard that features characters from their five major IP’s over their span as a video game developer. World of Warcraft, Diablo, Starcraft, The Lost Vikings, and Overwatch are all represented. Yet for Overwatch characters, they appear to be getting a lot of hate from the Heroes Of The Storm fanbase, much to the confusion of many.
This includes Battle.net member Rakanadyo, who is a longtime Blizzard fan, and has played four of the five franchises that are in this game. The play doesn’t understand why people are hating on Overwatch being represented when it’s a popular Blizzard franchise, and therefore has every right to be in the game.
I just don’t get it. I’m a Blizz fanboy and I love and want characters across all 4 franchises (5 if we go into Blizzard Classics).
But for the “haters”, this comes down to what they feel Overwatch is. It’s a new IP, and they feel it doesn’t “mesh well” with what Heroes of the Storm aims to be. Furthermore, they feel that unless you’ve played Overwatch, you won’t understand the backstories of the characters that arrive in HOTS, and thus lessen the experience. Which is true to an extent, because the stories of the Overwatch characters are detailed in conversations, comics, and video trailers, not necessarily in game like other Blizzard titles.
As some fans note, some players are just hating because having Overwatch players in the game “taints” their vision of what they feel Heroes Of The Storm should be. Which is understandable, but not necessarily fair. While it’s true that HOTS wasn’t pitched with Overwatch characters in the original trailers, it’s because the game wasn’t even out then, therefore it would’ve been foolish for Blizzard to include them when it wasn’t clear at the time if the game would succeed.
Personally, I think this is an unfair judgement. Overwatch is a massively popular game, so Blizzard decided to put it in Heroes Of The Storm. They wanted to put those characters in. So, it’s really their call, not fans, or even media, to decide whether this should keep happening. If Blizzard wants to do something, they’ll do it. Now, it’s perfectly fine to not be happy that there are so many Overwatch characters in HOTS, but, don’t go blasting them just because you’re not a fan, that’s unfair to those who love the franchise and love to have them in it.
