Overwatch devs receive a lot of toxic feedback from players on a daily basis and it is probably time to realize that they deserve more respect.
Overwatch’s community is often tagged as extremely toxic and individualistic, but there are always exceptions of course. Sadly, as unacceptable behavior grows in the game more people are forced to take on this attitude. The toxicity is not limited to in-game conversations, as players often plague Overwatch’s official forums and Reddit with disrespectful statements targeted at the game’s devs (or each other).
One of the main causes of this is that players can’t accept that game developers will never be able to collectively satisfy everyone’s needs. If they decide to buff a character after a wave of complaints, a new wave will arise from players who will call the buffed character overpowered. When players are begging for a character nerf and get it, a new set of players will start crying whose main just got nerfed. Evidently, it is normal to express your thoughts on a game’s content that you have issues with. However, there are constructive ways to do it, and many Overwatch players simply express their issues in an insulting, inappropriate way.
Imagine you are an artist, a musician or a writer. You create something to impress others, and when your audience looks at your work, you expect them to provide you with respectful feedback. When you get reactions such as “f*ck you Blizzard, this is shit” or people simply say that you are bad at what you are doing, will you be motivated to meet their needs? Probably not. In this sense, players expect Overwatch devs to constantly implement changes to their “creation” that please them, but cannot make an effort to provide the feedback in a respectful way. Some of you will probably say, “but I paid to play this game, so I do what I want,” and that is an awful attitude. Treat people the way you’d expect them to treat you, regardless of the context.
Overwatch’s community, however, is not only made up of toxic and provocative players. From time to time, you can actually bump into decent players who believe that the Overwatch dev team is currently not being treated appropriately. BoopBot made a really pleasant post on the Overwatch forums, where he asks the game’s player base to treat devs better.
“[…]they get yelled at for any decisions instead of it being brought up in polite conversation.”
The Overwatch dev team is made up of people who are just like you. They have feelings, boundaries and the need to be treated the right way. No player should expect anyone to listen to their problems with Overwatch if they can’t wrap it up nicely.
