Every time the end of the year approaches, the minds of gamers and critics alike turn their minds to the question of “what was the best game in…”, and many answers are brought forth. The first major Game of the Year event will be The Game Awards on December 7th, and yesterday, the full list of nominations was released. In the category of “Best Ongoing Game” (referring to titles that have been constantly updated and played), Overwatch found itself nominated.
Though a step down in some ways (as the title won many literal Game of the Year awards after its debut last year), it’s still a very interesting category to be a part of, and it is well deserved. For the team at Blizzard have been hard at work implementing many new things into the game. Not the least of which is new characters, new worlds, new modes, and many, MANY, new balance patches and updates.
Now, the fun thing about The Game Awards is that it is you the fan who gets to decide the winners, and that’s very important. Not just because it allows your voice to be heard, but because there’s a lot of competition in this category.
For Overwatch is going against some other very popular ongoing games, including Warframe (which had a VERY successful expansion recently), Rainbow Six Siege (which has been going strong for some time now), Grand Theft Auto Online (which still sells like mad), Destiny 2 (which is popular despite controversy) and PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (do I have to say it?).
So yeah, your vote matters, and fans know it. In fact, the Overwatch subreddit is actually trying to rally its members together in order to ensure that the game wins the competition. But will it though? Guess we’ll have to wait for December 7th to find out.
