Games evolve, and sometimes, in their evolution, they adopt ideas that seem like good ideas at the time, but also can be detrimental to its players. Other times, they put in ideas that once in players are like, “How did we not have this before?” This dual choice is the focus of our piece here, as Overwatch is apparently aiming to add health bars to the game.
The video below, made by Youtuber ggDOA comes from the Overwatch PTR, which is the test browser for new implementations for the game. As you can see, the health bars are on the top left and right hand corners of the screen, and show the character, along with how much health they have, and have left. This is where the question comes in, is this a good thing? Or a bad thing? Watch the video, then we’ll discuss…
This one is a bit tricky to talk about, as every player is different, and it’s clear just from the Youtube comments that some people are all for it, but others may not be.
On one hand, having the health bars visible is a good way to gauge how your team is doing in battle. Especially when a teammate going down unexpectedly can hugely hurt a strategy. Having them visible makes it so that you can adjust before one of them goes down, or even warn them so that they can get to a healer you have in the group.
On the other hand, they seem a little big, especially with the full-on avatar picture. This could hurt visibility if not correctly programmed. Furthermore, if it is available on screen to view, it’s possible that players will try and view it every few seconds, and that could distract from the gameply itself, thus making it less fun.
Now again, these aren’t in Overwatch just yet, but they could be soon. Let us know what you think about them in the comments below!
