2017 was a very interesting year for gaming, not just because of major console releases, but because of the absolute onslaught of major titles releasing from all three major publishers (and slews of indie game developers) that seemed to just fill up the entire year! Rarely a month went by without a major release in one facet or another. Because of that, when various sites decided to name their “Game of the Year”, there was a lot of competition as to what games were worthy. A consistent one on the list though was Persona 5.
This grand turn-based RPG with simulator elements and a flashy anime style won the hearts of many. It’s the best-selling game in the Persona franchise, and definitively proved it could have mainstream appeal. This, coupled with some other things, made it the Game of the Year for DualShockers. Here’s what they had to say about the game.
“As the title says, Persona 5 was a game that came and stole our hearts. In a year that saw amazing releases — including The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Horizon: Zero Dawn, NieR: Automata, and Super Mario Odyssey — it came up against some stiff competition. But at the end of the day, Atlus’ expertly told narrative, impeccable style, and lovable characters won the day.”
Now, why are we focusing on just this one site picking Persona 5 as the winner? Well, it’s honestly because it hasn’t been selected as the winner by many other sites. Don’t get us wrong, the choices other sites made were usually very fair, with numerous picking Breath of the Wild as their choice, however, this game deserves credit too.
What’s more, both the staff of DualShockers AND the readers of Dualshockers picked Persona 5 as their Game of the Year, this marked only the second time this happened on the site, which is pretty cool in our eyes.
