Overwatch is an entity which likes to have many different types of characters, that way players can find one that perfectly suits their playstyle. However, for the popular Blizzard shooter, there seems to be a bit of discontent in regards to the healers. Mainly because there’s only two that can “solo heal”, and one is better than the other.
We speak of course of Mercy, who is both famous and infamous in the community. She’s so powerful that she’s gotten a combo team name with another character via Pharmercy (Pharah and Mercy) and it’s a pretty powerful combo. But what angers some players is that Blizzard said before launch that no character would feel like a “requirement”, and yet that appears to be the case with Mercy.
And the numbers back up this claim, as Mercy has a 90% pickrate when it comes to competitive matches. That’s a lot. Whilst there are other healers, like Ana, many players agree that Mercy is vastly superior, so why use a unit who is technically inferior when you can use one that’s more of a sure thing?
This isn’t the first time someone has made notes about Mercy being the “only true healer” in Overwatch, as one Redditor noted before how to make Mercy less of a sure pick without nerfing her. And it is an interesting idea, but this continued chatter does speak to an overarching issue in the game: they need more healers.
There is a 26th character coming, and they could be revealed at BlizzCon, but if it’s not a healer, I bet many would agree that the next hero, male or female, needs to be a healer.
