With the launch of the League of Legends preseason 2018 website, players can enjoy some new info on the updated rune system, and even start plan out their rune builds for when the change goes live November 8th. The site also details additional changes coming to the MOBA in November, including the elimination of the level 30 cap, and the merger between IP and Blue Essence.
League of Legends Runes in 2018
As of November 8th, runes in League of Legends will be free and chosen much like the current mastery system. It’ll take multiple rune builds for multiple champions or even the same champions in different match ups. Runes are divided into five families – Precision, Domination, Sorcery, Resolve, and Inspiration – with each having a different bend for enhancing your play.

While just the keystone runes are outlined on the preseason site, the whole system is still considered a work in progress, so don’t expect any of this to be set in stone. In addition to the new rune system, Riot will be removing the concept of a level cap entirely. Players will now be able to continuously level up, and will earn rewards that increase in tiers according to their level. Every level will earn you an unlocked capsule containing blue essence and champion shards. Milestone levels will provide even more rewards.
The team at Riot is also planning on honoring players who have spent lots of time in the game with unique Veteran emotes, available in three versions depending on just how veteran you really are.
For the full details, head over to the preseason site, which is live now. And if you just can’t wait until November for all these updates, you can keep yourself preoccupied watching Worlds.
