Variety is without a doubt the spice of life. Through it, we get to see some truly special and unique things. When it comes to video games, we get new experiences that charm us and make us wonder. In the genre of MMORPGs though, there does appear to be a certain bias of sorts, for though players love fantasy versions of the genre, and even sci-fi, it’s the Superhero MMORPG that may just have the most passionate fanbase of all. Why is that?
Well, it’s honestly not too hard to understand on a base level. Whether it’s DC Universe Online, or the soon-to-be shutdown Marvel Heroes game, it’s easy to see the appeal. After all, these are established franchises and worlds that most everyone knows. Regardless of which side you’re on, there’s a certain appeal to being in a game with these legendary characters. Who wouldn’t want to try that out?
I mean, come on! There’s heroes, villains, the stories that made them great, most all of it are in Superhero MMORPGs. I remember when DC Universe Online was revealed, there was a massive trailer that depicted a battle between the Justice League and a group of their legendary villains. It was massive, and it was brutal, and through it all it got me excited and wanting to play the game.
I never did, but I’m cheap, that’s my excuse.
Regardless though, there’s a fun to these games that can’t be ignored. For DCUO, you even got to create your own character, and choose whether they were a hero or a villain. That’s very cool. Plus, on both sides, the ability to expand is infinite. After all, if you do want to, all you have to do is reach into comics history and either add a new character, or pull a legendary story and put it into the game.
So, why are Superhero MMORPGs beloved? A better question is, why not?
