The esports movement grows with just about every day that passes, and new games are always trying to enter the fray to become the next big esports event. Such is the case with PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, which has been slowly but surely growing its esports presence. And over the weekend, a major even for the game ended, the IEM Invitational Oakland. With it, came bragging right for four men, who rose above all the others in order to claim dominance in the game.
The team who won was called against All authority, and were comprised of Monkey, Shadow1k, Shiv, and Oraxe. Their prize for winning the tournament? $60,000. Not bad for a video game huh? This victory is even sweeter for them though as they actually had to fight (as in, in the game) to enter the tournament via qualifiers, and they didn’t let that opportunity go to waste. No, they did not.
Oh, and make no mistake, against All authority had to earn their victory once the main tournament started. For with 20 teams in the IEM Invitational, and eight brutal matches to do, there’s a lot that could’ve gone wrong, and gone right. What made them the winners though was that they were incredibly consistent in their output during the matches. This lead to them getting a comfortable lead on the leaderboards, and then securing their victory.
PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds will no doubt continue to grow in the esports movement. Not the least of which is because it’s one of the most popular games right now with 20+ million players and records on Steam being broken basically every day. More than that though, with the upcoming Xbox One edition, that opens up even more avenues for the game.
So, who will rise to the top of the next competition? Guess we’ll have to wait and see.
