Games are creative, there’s no two ways about it, but the trick at times is to make something that’s so creative that players may not get how you came up with such an idea. Steam is filled with these kinds of games, and another has just been added to its vast roster in the form of What Remains of Edith Finch. This first-person mystery/adventure game is much more than meets the eye.
What if you were the last remaining member of your family? That would be pretty terrible, right? You being all alone with no family to your name. But what if you didn’t know WHY you were the last of your family? That would be a mystery. Well, that’s what’s happening to Edith Finch. She is the last of her family, and now she has to figure out why this is by exploring her family home.
To be clear, that’s not all this is, because the house is massive, and as you’ll explore, you’ll come into contact with items that’ll take her to the last day of a family member. That’s right, you’ll get to play through the final day/hours of a person and watch as they live and die. These stories will paint a picture as to what happened, as well as give you unique gameplay experiences for each person you find out about.
You’ll never know where the next story takes you, but you will know exactly how it ends. As the team notes on their Steam Page for the game, What Remains of Edith Finch is about, “what it feels like to be humbled and astonished by the vast and unknowable world around us.”
The team behind the game, Giant Sparrow, are best known for their title The Unfinished Swan, which should tell you just how unique and creative this game is. What Remains of Edith Finch is available now.
