Arguably the single most important aspect of a MMORPG is the character development system. Epic quests and breath-taking graphics are also crucial facets, but become irrelevant if players aren’t able to feel unique and perceive meaningful growth. Thankfully, the character development system in Revelation Online (as described in a recent overview) seems to be well designed and expansive.
Methods of gaining experience points in Revelation Online will be familiar to any MMORPG player. Completing quests, conquering dungeons, and defeating other players are just a few examples. From level 40 and onwards, players won’t automatically level up. Instead, players are given full control of when they actually level up (provided they’ve gained sufficient experience points).
As players level up, they will gain development points, which are invested into skills. The potency of a skill increases with the amount of development points spent on it. Multiple skill builds can be saved, and one can easily be selected as the active skill build. This feature is important because some skills are more useful in specific situations. For example, players may wish to have separate skill builds for PvE and PvP.
Especially potent skills are called special skills. Each class has its own unique special skill, which becomes more powerful the more it’s activated. Special skills must be charged up, and will only be available as a fight progresses.
Guild bases can be used to passively train special skills, as well as upgrading a character’s stats. They can even enable a character to learn skills for traversing the world.
Each skill has its own development tree, which serves to modify the skill in various ways. Examples of modifications are increased damage, reduced mana cost, and burn/freeze effects. Players will unlock talent points to spend on their development trees as they level up and complete milestones.
Speaking of, each character has six milestones, which provide many beneficial bonuses, such as increased health and attack power. Milestones are unlocked by fulfilling specific requirements. These requirements are easily completed by progressing through the game normally (ex. spending talent points).
Lastly, there’s the Soul Grid, a disc that accepts magical crystals. Magical crystals provide passive stat bonuses to a character, and should be carefully selected to achieve specific objectives. Soul Grids come in different qualities, with higher quality ones possessing more slots.
With all these features available, there are endless possibilities when developing a character. How do you plan on developing your character? Let us know in the comments section below!
