RPGs are one of the most beloved and respected video game genres in the world. They pride themselves on fun combat, flexibility on how game mechanics are handled, amazing characters, and of course, for deep, compelling storylines. They’re truly special, and thus, many of the best games ever made are RPGs of one sort or another. Recently, a string of remakes of RPGs have been made, but there are still some interesting titles we’d love to see get a modern remake. Here are a few of them.
Let’s start with one of the originals, shall we? How about…Fallout? The original Fallout we mean. Long before it was taken over by Bethesda, Fallout helped define how deep and how dark an RPG could go, and a modern remake set in the original style of gameplay would be very cool to try out. Imagine the top-down perfectly rendered in 1080p, it’d be something cool for sure.
And then, there’s Final Fantasy. Now, of course, several Final Fantasy games have been remade, most recently Final Fantasy XII via The Zodiac Age, and Final Fantasy VII is getting a remake as well. But, there’s one game from the lineup that is arguably just as important as VII, and ironically, it’s the one that came right before it. Final Fantasy VI.
What makes this game so memorable is that it has one of the most insane and perfectly built villains in gaming history: Kefka the Clown. To see his ascension from jester to god in HD graphics would be something truly spectacular.
Finally, for all you Nintendo fanboys and fangirls out there, there’s a series of games from the Fire Emblem franchise that deserve modern remakes. With Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia, Nintendo proved they’re willing to bring the Japan-only games to the US. And Shadows of Valentia was an amazing game for sure! So now, why not give us Mystery of the Emblem? Genealogy of the Holy War? Thracia 776? These games deserve to be respected the world over, so why not?
