Video games have very memorable characters, ones that have built themselves up through numerous games to become some of the most known characters ever. However, much like other media, there are “cult-classics,” and video games are no different. And one of the most popular cult-classic video game characters is a half-genie hero known as Shantae. Shantae has been the star of her own series that has been made by Wayforward over the years. She’s been on handhelds, consoles, and everything in between, and a new adventure is about to arrive for her franchise via Shantae: Pirate Queen’s Quest.
You see, the lastest game in the series, Shantae: Half-Genie Hero, was funded entirely on Kickstarter, and part of the stretch goals was that a special extension of the game would be made, and it would focus on series villain, and fan-favorite character, Risky Boots the Pirate. And she’s the star of Shantae: Pirate Queen’s Quest.
What’s important to note about the new content is that this isn’t just a new playable character scenario. Wayforward told everyone on Kickstarter that this is a full-on extension of the game. New playable character, new abilities, new story, new levels, the whole nine yards. Which makes sense in a lot of ways as Risky and Shantae are two entirely different characters, and thus it would be literally impossible for the two to do the same game.
Risky in fact was the villain of Half-Genie Hero, but, she also helped Shantae in the GBA title Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse, so her and Risky have a bit of a complicated history.
Now, as for when you’ll get the game. If you were a backer on the Kickstarter, you’ll be getting the code to the extension for FREE this week, with some even getting it today. But, if you didn’t, you’ll need to pay for it, and the extension will go live on August 29th.
