Steam Early Access is the perfect place for indie developers to not only show off their games, but to help grow them with the help of players. This goes double for games that aren’t exactly “typical”. For example, how about a roguelike game that features elements of a collectible card game? Sound like fun? Well, if so, you might be interested in Slay the Spire from Megacrit. For this game does just that, and more, and it’s hitting Steam Early Access tomorrow.
The game is certainly unique, blending the best elements from both genres into something truly special. How the game works is this, you’ll pick one of two characters, each of whom is entirely different and have different decks of cards to use, and then you ascend up a tower. Inside this tower are monsters that are truly bizarre and will challenge you as you go up it.
Once you engage in a battle, this is where the cards themselves come in. You’ll have to use them wisely to defeat your foes, and that’s still only the beginning.
For just like any good roguelike game, Slay The Spire itself will never be played the same way twice. Even if you do see some similar areas, you’ll have choices on how to ascend. You can take the easier path, or truly push yourself and go for glory. But each time, you’ll need to evolve, and you’ll do that through your deck. There are 200+ cards for you to use, and there will be more coming. You’ll want to try them all out to see which ones best suit your character, and your strategy. Not to mention, you’ll want to have some cards to beat certain kinds of monsters.
Add that to special Relics that can help you advance even more, and Slay the Spire sounds like a truly epic adventure just waiting to be taken.
