Sonic The Hedgehog may be one of gaming’s greatest titans and most famous mascots, but that doesn’t mean all his games are good. In fact, the vast majority of recent Sonic The Hedgehog games have been very bad. If you don’t believe us, look at Sonic Boom. Yet, in 2017, it seemed as though things were about to turn around. Sonic Mania brought back classic Sonic gameplay to the masses, and they ate it up! Then, Sonic Forces was going to be the mainstream Sonic game that fans would love.
But…not so much. In fact, fans and critics overall were very “meh” about Sonic Forces. The setup was good, Eggman taking over the world, the legion of legendary Sonic villains teaming up to end Sonic and his friends, and the players getting to create their own character, it all seemed perfect. Yet, it just wasn’t to be. And now, an interesting piece of DLC is already dividing people, the arrival of Super Sonic.

For the record, the arrival of the modern and classic Super Sonic isn’t the controversial part. Rather, the idea that it’s only free for a month is turning head. For after the free month is up, players will have to play $2 to get the characters. Now, yes, that’s not a lot of money, but it’s honestly the principal of the thing. Super Sonic has long been a natural part of the games, and now, we have to pay to get him. Sonic Team hasn’t been doing good on the “winning fans back” department, and this likely won’t be any different.
Given the reception to Sonic Forces, and how this DLC is already getting negative attention, it’s going to be interesting to see what happens next.
