Yakuza 0, the prequel to the long running Sega franchise, has released on PS4. This game is meant to be a perfect entryway to those who have heard of the series, yet feel it’s hard to get into it via the number of titles the game has to offer. But as Sony notes in the latest PlayStation Blog, this is the perfect game for fans new and all.
Easily one of the best things about Yakuza 0 is that there’s tons of places to explore and sub-stories to uncover. After all, this is Tokyo in 1988, there’s a lot going on here. For example, there are ancient martial arts masters, drunken homeless dudes, debt collectors who reveal new fighting techniques to you (seriously), Club SEGAs with brand new Out Run or Space Harrier arcade cabinets to play, or (should you feel you need it) you can go to the Telephone Clubs to try and find love.
In the game, you play as Kazuma Kiryu, a low level man in the Yakuza crime family. During a simple “collection run”, you accidentally kill the man you’re trying to get money from, and that puts a lot of things into motion. Not the least of which is that now, the Yakuza isn’t happy with you.
As the game goes on, the Dojima Family is going through a power vacuum with Kiryu stuck in the dead center of it. There’s some pretty deep stuff here, and a lot more than meets the eye. Money is the name of the game in many ways, but the truth of it is that you’ll want money to upgrade Kazuma and his abilities.
There’s a lot to Yakuza 0, and again, it’s meant to help bring people into the franchise. So, if you have a PS4, you might want to check it out, it’s available now.
