At The Game Awards last year, Bandai Namco revealed that they were working on a new title in the long-standing fighting series known as Soul Calibur. The game had apparently been years in the making, and is set to debut this year on Xbox One, PS4, and PC. Only a slight bit of footage was shown at The Game Awards, but we did get some setting details. Mainly, that Soul Calibur VI would feature a return to the game’s origins, and feature an interesting take on things and how they unfold.
What they meant by this was unclear, but now, we have a little more context, as a new trailer has been revealed, and it shows some things that weren’t there in the series before. First off, we get a new character to the series via Groh, who is also called “The Agent in Black”. He wields a combined sword that can also separate into individual ones, which makes him an interesting threat.
What’s more, him, along with Nightmare, Kilik, and Xianghua, all seemed to wield elemental abilities in their attacks. Maybe a customizable feature? And then, there’s the trailers ending…
Yeah, apparently, Soul Edge can now corrupt combatants in battle, unleashing devastating new attacks and abilities in battle. As you saw, Kilik had his very blunt bo staff turned into a spear that he used to devastate Xianghua. And that was just one character, although, we did appear to see a bit of the corruption in Groh when he was in the spotlight.
What does this mean? Is Soul Calibur VI going to show an even darker power of Soul Edge? Is this the power of Inferno himself shining through in a new way? Will all characters be susceptible to this corruption? We’ll find out when the game releases later this year.
