One of the reasons that Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic was so popular wasn’t just the gameplay, or the focus on an age of the Star Wars universe that had barely been touched before. Rather, it was because of the compelling characters that you got to meet, as well as play as. One of the biggest twists in the game was that your character, the main character, was actually a former Sith, Darth Revan. He had his mind wiped, and then became a Jedi and helped save the galaxy.
Fans reacted so strongly to the tale of Darth Revan that they wanted more, and co-creator of Darth Revan Drew Karpyshyn talked about how the character’s story helped connect all the Old Republic stories. From the original RPG games, to a special comic set after the games, and finally, to Star Wars: The Old Republic, the MMORPG set within that universe.
It still amazes Karpyshyn to this day that Revan took off like he did. He notes that even from the beginning, Revan was something special. He was one of the few Star Wars characters to be seen on both sides of the Force (mirroring another key Force wielder in the series…), and when fans wanted more, Bioware was more than happy to give it to them.
This included not just a comic series, but also the Shadow of Revan Expansion that came to Star Wars: The Old Republic in 2014. It was a way to truly end the story of Darth Revan and ensure that all The Old Republic stories were forever intertwined.
To celebrate the recent release of Knights of the Old Republic on Xbox One, Bioware is allowing players to play Shadow of Revan for free. So if you haven’t gotten the chance to see the end of this now legendary character, here is your chance.
