The System Shock series was a very popular duo of RPG titles. In fact, they were so popular that they are still revered to this day. Not only that, but they were the inspiration behind many RPG titles to come, including the renown Bioshock series, among others. Now, Otherside Entertainment is working on System Shock 3, and they’ve just signed a deal with Starbreeze Publishing to expand the reach of the title when it is released.
As revealed in a press release from Starbreeze, the publishing company has invested $12 million dollars in Otherside for the sole purpose of distributing System Shock 3 to PC and consoles. This is a big step in making sure the game is a success across the board and not just a cult-hit.
“System Shock is one of those iconic franchises in the history of games that still gets my blood going and Mr. Spector is one of the founding fathers of the modern action RPG” said Bo Andersson-Klint, Starbreeze CEO. “We’re greatly looking forward to bringing System Shock 3 to players world wide in our collaboration with Otherside Entertainment and Warren Spector’s team. I’ll be first in line to play”.
“Mr. Spector” is of course Warren Spector, who is the head of the team at Otherside Entertainment. His team is behind a lot of legendary gaming titles, including the original System Shock titles, thus lending credibility to what they’re trying to do.
According to reports, System Shock 3 will pick up the story of System Shock from where System Shock 2 left off. This means that SHODAN is alive, because she downloaded her consciousness into Rebecca Siddons. SHODAN’s motivations will be a key part of the game, according to Spector.
Where this will take System Shock 3 is hard to say, since the game still has to be made and released before any true judgments can be made. In the meantime, it is ok to speculate, and this is one move that could possibly mean good things.
