Whether or not this is a prime example of trolling, rumors have surfaced that Blizzard will be closing the Diablo III servers in 2020, and selling off the rights to the game.
The source of the rumor comes from a user on the Battle.net forums, which granted is hardly the most reliable of sources. The post went on to come under ridicule, particularly after Technical Support member MissCheetah chimed in with the following, after reminding user that Diablo I is over 20 years old and can still be played online, as can Diablo II after over 10 years:
Blizzard provides very long term support for their games. D3 is not going anywhere and they most certainly would not sell the franchise! It is one of the best selling PC games of all time and D2 helped define the ARPG genre. Selling a money making franchise and intellectual property rights would be suicidal and is not going to happen as long as Blizzard is a viable company.
So where did the rumor come from? With the user behind the original post unable to provide the evidence of the video in which the rumblings came from, it emerged that it came from Diablo YouTuber Rhykker, in which a comment jokingly stated:
“in 2020, the new diablo announcement: we’re shutting down the diablo 3 servers, permanently retiring the franchise, and selling its rights to the amish.”
So if you do come across rumors such as these, I think it’s safe to say that you can put them to bed pretty darn quickly. Diablo III isn’t going anywhere, and neither is the franchise.
