Much of the commentary about the loss has to do with other professional gamers painting a target on the back of Wings members. As the champions of The International earlier this year, Wings Gaming was definitely considered as a major contender for the Boston Major.
Evil Geniuses was able to sweep Wings in what turned out to be a 2-0 match up. Game 2 in particular looked like it was going to be a complete upset, with Evil Geniuses having a very substantial lead in gold, experience and kills. While Wings did stage a number of surprising reversals on the momentum Evil Geniuses was able to create early on, none of their efforts were enough from stopping the game’s scales from tipping against their favor.
The Main Event of the Boston Major is just getting under way, and Wings is only the second team eliminated. Earlier today, Virtus.pro was able to beat out iG Vitality in a 2-0 sweep to earn their spot in the quarter finals. They will now face off against Evil Geniuses on December 9th, kicking off the Boston Major’s quarter final contests.
Still to come today is compLexity up against WG.Unity, and OG versus MVP Phoenix. The final match of the Boston Major is scheduled to take place on December 10th, at 6 PM EST. The total prize pool for the competition is U.S. $3 million.
