Video games are multi-facted, they have multiple intents and purposes. But more than that, the AAA titles especially have a desire to be larger than life, or at the very least, larger than video game life. So, when technology allowed for greater and greater abilities, developers looked for ways to further promote their titles. One of the biggest and best ways to do this was through the use of cinematic trailers. Trailers that would capture the minds and imaginations of the players, even if it didn’t exactly fully represent the game.
On Reddit, user For_Your_Krarma has a deep appreciation for cinematic trailers. Mainly because he’s a video maker and editor himself. So, he decided to list some of his favorites. Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Jak X Combat Racing, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, and even the recent Ghosts of Tushima all made the cut. And that got us thinking, what are the best cinematic trailers in gaming history? Well, here’s one of my personal favorites:
Saints Row: The Third is widely considered the best of the Saints Row franchise, and this trailer shown at E3 the year of its release helped prove why. This trailer showed and teased exactly what was coming in the game, and is ripe with Easter Eggs if you know where to look. Plus, it just looks dang good.
Another classic for sure is Mass Effect 3. While still one of the most controversial games of all time, it took also got the hype going with its cinematic trailer, as the popular “Take Earth Back” movement was started with it. It also proved just how good Bioware was with telling a story in a trailer and not just in a video game.
