There was a time when cheating in video games was permitted. And by “permitted” we mean there were codes given to players by the team to help them get through the games. But, as time went on, the cheating ways of players grew to an astonishing level, as did their creativity on how to do it. For MMORPGs like World of Warcraft, one of the most popular ways to cheat is to create a bot. But as some are finding out, that’s not smart, at all.
For those who don’t know, a “bot” is a program that is created to control your character for a set amount of time and do tasks for you. A popular bot-using set of players is the Honorbuddy community and they just got hit with a major banhammer.
This is a significant thing, for while players using bots have been banned before, this is a major blow to that community. For as far as Reddit can tell, many that use the Honorbuddy bot system have been banned. In fact, some have apparently received permanent bans from World of Warcraft, showing just how much Blizzard cares about players doing things the right way in their game.
Needless to say…the gamers on Reddit were very happy to hear this. In fact, they were celebrating in a variety of ways via the comments. They’re glad to see Blizzard taking a big step to free the game from those who exploit it. Now, they want them to keep going, and not stop until all botters are gone.
Could this happen? Sure. But it will take time. Botting can at times be hard to spot, but if they can do it for one system, they might be able to do it for all of them.
