It’s hard to believe that its been a decade and a half, a whopping 15 years since the original Xbox first launched. On a cold day in November 2001, Microsoft launched the Xbox along with Halo: Combat Evolved, which has become one of the company’s biggest flagship franchises ever since.
Over the years, the Xbox brand has had its ups and downs financially, particularly in the early days of the debut console, in which Microsoft lost around $5 billion dollars in the console business. This was followed up by the Xbox 360, which enjoyed massive success when it launched back in 2005. The latest console release, the Xbox One, endured a shaky start after a rather disastrous E3 reveal. Since then, it has proven to be a massive hit with fans and on the console market, especially in more recently with the Xbox One S also releasing this year. As a consequence, Microsoft has managed to outsell its closest competitor, Sony’s PlayStation 4, since July.
So today marks an occasion where we look back in fondness of the first Xbox console. Here are some impressive numbers that Microsoft have recently accumulated:
- 222,468,423 players
- 100,539,390,670 hours played
- 29,000,304,183 multiplayer hours played
- 32,667,582,157 achievements unlocked
- 572,605,554,587 Gamerscore achieved
- Highest Gamerscore: 1,416,465
- 4,233,891,482 Xbox Live friendships made
Happy birthday, Xbox!
